About Department

Department of Geography is established in 1973 in the biggest of its kind in the Shivaji University, Kolhapur and imparting knowledge of Geography. Geography department is running graduate programme in Geography in the jurisdiction of Shivaji University, Kolhapur.



SWOT Analysis
a) Strengths:

- Department has Good academic culture.
- Department has qualified staff, 02- NET Qualified, 01- SET Qualified, 3 Ph.D. (Ongoing)
- Department has well equipped laboratory viz. Weather Instruments, graphical Instrument, Area Calculating and Mapping Instruments,Surveying Instrument, Drawing Instrument etc.
- Department has teaching student advance syllabus viz. GIS, Remote Sensing, Computer application in Geography etc.



b) Weakness:

- Student of the department having deprived backward region.
- They have economically poor and negative attitude to the get admission to self-financed courses or career oriented courses.
- College runs in rural area so student have not approach to higher education because no availability of nearby PG centres.
- Department has no separate non-teaching staff to maintain department and helping in practical manner.



c) Opportunities/Challenges:

- GIS & Remote sensing short term and long term courses, - Travel and Tourism courses, - Surveying courses - M.A./M.Sc.PG courses. - PG Diploma courses in GIS. - GIS software industries.



d) Threat:

- In present globalization are challenges to subject and student to need of change the syllabus advance technology and organized courses of career oriented. - As per University level launched program of distance education it is challenges in reduced college student strength. - Nearby college campus within five kilometer area start colleges today.

- To Initiate PG programme in Geography.
- To Start A Certificate Course in Travel & Tourism.
- To undertake Minor Research Project.
- To Organization of National/State Level Workshop/ Conference.
- To Start Geo- informatics Course.
- To develop Computerized Lab with modern techniques.
- To increase the placement opportunities for the departmental students.
- To organize various activities under lead college scheme.
