NSS plays a vital role in shaping responsible citizens. It connects education with community service, helping students grow not just academically but also socially and morally.

Launch of National Service Scheme:

NSS was launched in 1969 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. It is mainly for students of schools, colleges, and universities.

Aims

The Aim of NSS can be derived from the objectives mentioned. These Aims could be stated as follows;
1. To identify the needs and problems in the community.
2. To evolve a viable solution to identify the problems.
3. To develop the sense of social and civic responsibility among the students.
4. To mobilize community participation in various developmental schemes.
5. To meet emergencies and natural disasters
6. To promote national integration
7. To develop leadership qualities and a democratic attitude among the students.
8. To arouse the social consciousness of students
9. To develop an attitude of selfless service among students, and
10. To improve the quality of life of the community
These Aims are carried out by NSS through regular programmes and special camping programmes

Objectives

The objectives to be achieved by enabling the students to –
1. Understand the community in which they work;
2. Understand themselves in relation to their community
3. Identify the needs and problems in the community in which they can be involved.
4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
5. Apply their education in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
6. Develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibility.
7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
8. Acquire leadership qualities and a democratic attitude.
